A Hobbyist Guide to Model Navy Ships

There are many different categories of model ships available. There are sailing vessels, yachts, Viking ships and historic ships which include famed naval ships. Model navy ships are a favorite of collectors and model builders because of their national significance. Plus, there are a variety of them for hobbyists to choose from. For example, there are ships from many different eras with names like the USS Oregon, USS Lexington, USS Roosevelt and USS Nimitz, just to name a few!

Usually, these navy model kits are made from plastic, although sometimes you'll also come across metal and wood models. Many plastic model parts come pre-painted, some do not. For those parts that must be painted, it is important to use paint that is designed for plastic. Your model kit should also come with detailed plans and model glue. When gluing or painting, ventilate the room by opening windows and use an exhaust fan if possible. Before beginning your model, gather all your supplies, make sure your work area is protected with cloth or newspaper, and read all the instructions.

The difficulty and time requirement to construct your model will depend on not only your skill level but the skill level requirements of the model you've chosen. There are kits suitable for beginners all the way up to advanced builders. Some kits are even made for younger hobbyists and snap together without the need for toxic glue, or use a non-toxic type of glue. Another factor that affects how long it takes to finish your naval model is how much time you devote to the process. Some people do a little work here and there, while others spend hours at a time working on their model.

Once your model navy ship has been successfully completed, make sure the glue is thoroughly dry before attempting to move the model. Once the glue is dry, you are ready to display your model. You may want to buy a clear plastic display case. This not only provides an attractive showcase, but also prevents the accumulation of dust. If you've got small children in your home, a display case can ensure your model isn't used as a toy. Although model glue is quite durable, it's not difficult for a boisterous child to cause accidental damage and sabotage your hours of effort. Ready to begin building your own model?
