Model Ships and Accessories: A Buyer's Guide

Building model ships is a hobby that is creative yet at the same time, is structured. The creativity comes with selecting your model and painting the parts if necessary, while the structured part comes with following the detailed plans and erecting the model piece by piece. When it comes to shopping for model ships and accessories, there is plenty of variety available. You can find sailing boats, yachts, historic ships, Viking ships and even pirate ships. There are kits crafted from plastic, wood, metal and even paper. The most common type these days seems to be plastic.

If you enjoy painting, a wood kit or an unpainted plastic one may be the best choice. If the idea of painting tiny parts with a tiny brush sounds aggravating, you can buy kits with the pieces already painted the correct color. Another choice you'll need to make is what skill level you prefer. The easiest type of kit would be the snap-together variety made for kids. From there, you'll find beginner, intermediate and advanced kits that require the pieces be glued together. Some of the more challenging kits contain an overwhelming variety of tiny pieces that may be too much for a newbie. So if you're just getting started, go beginner and work up from there.

As far as accessories go, most model ship kits will contain everything you need to build your model. This includes all the pieces, detailed plans, paint and glue. You might want to also get some tweezers for picking up small pieces. If you have trouble seeing tiny details, a magnifying glass may help. To cover your work table, newspaper or an old tablecloth is ideal. An exhaust fan, as well as an open window or two, is a must for ventilating the room and preventing the buildup of toxic fumes from the glue. You'll want a work area out of the reach of pets and children as it will be necessary to leave your model undisturbed while paint and/or glue is drying.

There are many places where model ships and accessories can be purchased. Stores like Wal-Mart and Target often have a small variety of model kits in the toy section. Hobby shops will usually have a wider selection, while online stores often have the best selection of all. Looking for a bargain? Try eBay! eBay has so many sellers doing business that you're likely to find great deals and lots of choices.
