It is well known that you can build scale models of cars, planes and boats with materials such as wood, plastic and metal. But did you know that it is possible to use paper to build such models as well? The art of crafting replicas from paper is one of the lesser known pursuits in the model building world but is one that can be fun and fulfilling. Many hobbyists with an interest in military history enjoy building paper model battle ships. In this article you'll learn more about the basics of this craft and where to find detailed plans for lots of vessels.
Battle ships are called warships because they are primarily used for war battles. There are famous historic ships throughout the ages, from ancient Roman times to today. If you're unsure as to what ship you want to build, look through some history books. Examples of notable U.S. battleships include those named after states such as the Maine and the Missouri. Once you have an idea as to what warship you want to construct, you can start looking for plans.
Thanks to computer aided design, or CAD, plans for model battle ships can be created, dowloaded and printed from the Internet. There are both free plans and those you must pay for available online. To find a variety of plans, just do a search engine query for "card model building" or "paper model building". One of the best things about this craft is the availability and affordability of the supplies. You don't want to use regular printer paper, though. A sturdy 90 weight paper is ideal for model building. You will want to buy a protective clear lacquer spray because most printer ink is not waterproof. If your model requires gluing, there are lots of paper glue choices on the market.
Building paper model battle ships can be a rewarding hobby that you just might get hooked on! One way to learn more about this pursuit is to join an online group. You can network with other builders and perhaps, even find some great free plans. By chatting with other crafters, you'll learn tips and techniques, as well as which types of paper, lacquer and glue are best. In no time, you're likely to have an impressive collection of paper models. Just be sure to find a safe place to display them as paper isn't the most durable model material.
