Plastic Model Ships -- Tips for Beginners
![]() |
Building model ships can be an enjoyable and relaxing hobby. If you're new to this hobby, it helps to learn more before getting started. The three most popular materials for model ships are wood, metal and plastic. Many crafters prefer plastic, as it is readily available, easy to work with, and suitable for beginners. This being said, there are certainly plenty of plastic kits that are also suitable for advanced builders. You'll find that when shopping for plastic model ships in kit form, the skill level is displayed on the box. There are beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. You'll even find kits made for young children that don't require any glue.
Kits are available for purchase at a variety of places. You can find some kits at your local variety store like Wal-Mart, K-Mart or Target, often in the toy department with the model cars and airplanes. Because there might not be the variety you want, it may be necessary to look elsewhere. Shopping online is a great idea because you'll find lots of specialty e-tailers that carry all sorts of hard-to-find models. EBay is another option, and perfect for the beginner seeking a good bargain. Just make sure you understand what comes with the kit and what doesn't. Sometimes, although not always, you may need to purchase additional tools or supplies.
As you begin your search for model ship kits, you'll find that there are many different types of ship models you can build. Historic ships, naval ships, Viking ships -- even pirate ships can be constructed from a model kit. There are other kinds of boats you can build as well, such as sailboats or yachts. For example, some of the plastic models available at the online retailer Hobby Place include the USS Arizona, Caribbean Pirate Ship, RMS Titanic and Roman Warship, to name a few. So, no matter what your area of interest is, you can find the ideal model kit either in stores or online.
The process for building plastic model ships is essentially the same, whether you're working with a beginner's model or an advanced one. Prepare your workstation in a well-ventilated area and put down protective covering such as a tarp or newspaper. Read the plans from start to finish, and map out the process step by step. Organize your supplies and put your parts in order. Some plastic models come with pieces that are already painted, while others require you to do the painting. If you will be painting pieces, always do this first and allow them to dry completely for at least 24 hours before assembly. How long it will take to complete a model depends on how intricate it is, how experienced you are, and how much time you have to devote to the process.
