Why Collect Scale Model Ships?

Scale model ships are small versions of the real thing. These are often referred to as replicas or representations. There are many different kinds of model ships available, including those from different time periods. You'll find Viking ships, sailing vessels, historic ships, pirate ships, military ships and more in replica form. These replicas can range in size from very tiny to rather large although most are of appropriate size that they can be displayed on a shelf or desk. Many people collect model ships for investment purposes, as a hobby, or as an enhancement to home or office decor.

Then there are those hobbyists who are not only collectors, but builders of model ships, as well. This can be an enjoyable pastime and offers more satisfaction and fulfillment than you'd get if you simply purchased a model ship already assembled. There are all kinds of kits out there for model builders to enjoy. Some are easy and perfect for kids or beginners. Others are at a more challenging intermediate skill level, while still others are extremely advanced. As previously mentioned, there is a lot of variety on the market these days. For example, you could build an old-fashioned sailboat in a bottle, a famous naval battleship or even the RMS Titanic if you so chose!

The kits that are available come in a variety of materials, including wood, plastic, metal and even heavyweight paper. Wood is the preferred material for many collectors because of its beauty and realism. Plastic is also popular, especially with hobbyist crafters. Metal is a bit harder to find but makes for a durable and realistic model. Paper is easy to obtain, fun for kids to craft with and quite unique as a model ship material. Some model kits include pieces that are already the color they need to be, while other kits require the builder to paint the pieces before putting them together.

Scale model ships have many benefits, whether you're building them or simply collecting them. Years from now, one or more of your models may fetch a pretty penny from another collector. Not only that, but they make distinguished objects of art for nautical or sea themed rooms and look great in a masculine office or study. Many people find building model ships a relaxing and fun way to spend free time. If you have children or teens, building a model with them can be a rewarding bonding experience that teaches the value of patience, hard work and following instructions.
